Review of research 4

I found this research a lot harder than any of the others. Many of the web sites I visited you could not find any information on who wrote the article or when the site was last updated. I found lots of information on my topic but much of it I could not use because I just could not find anything in the A.S.P.C.T. to make it credible. What was most frustrating is that with my topic a lot of really good information was on some of the pages and you know it would be useful if you were really doing a research paper but you just couldn't use it because it could be uncredible.

Search Tool

The search tool I chose to look more into was ixquick.

The five great tools of this search are:

1. Use the + sign in front of words that must be in your search. Example: Granny smith +apple +pie recipe. You will get all apple pie recipes including granny smith recipes, if you wanted only granny smith recipes you would also put a + in front of it also.

2. Use the - sign in front of words that must not be present. Example: Nascar news -Kyle Bush. If you are looking for news from Nascar but you don't want information or articles on Kyle Bush this is how to skip the cry baby all together.

3. Use host: all information on this page must be located on this specified computer or on more specific computers. Example: host :columbian.com you will get info from columbian.com and www.columbian.com

4. Use link: page must contain a hyperlink for which at least one of the words in the destination address begins with specified text. Example: link:nytimes

5. Use "" to keep phrases together and not all over the page. Example: "south park" will make sure you get the naughty cartoon and not parks that are south of somewhere.

Summery of research part 3

I found this part of the research to be the hardest so far. Learning what makes the best boolean search took me some time. The things I thought were important to the search sometimes were not. I found it to be a good tool just a hard one to get the hang of.

I also had some trouble finding things in the library's databases. The newspaper articles and scholarly journals were easy it was the magazine articles I had more trouble with. I don't know if it was just that the subject I was using there just have not been many articles written or if I was just not searching the correct way. In the end I found all the different search choices to be fun and challenging and that there is really a lot of great stuff out there to read and use in the future.

I chose this article because it was the best of the two I could find. It proposes that all sites on the internet be rated like we rate movies and then providers need to make it so kids can't access sites that are not rated for their age range.

Summery of unit 4

This week’s research has been the best so far! Just looking up books I would like to read in Google books and IT Pro could keep me busy for a lifetime. IT Pro has a great advanced search tool that you can use to really narrow your search if you’re looking for something very specific. I found this tool extremely helpful. In short, all the tools we learned about this week are amazing! I think every student at Clark should be aware that these tools are available to them to use.

IT Pro research

Holy Cow! I love this! The IT Pro has so many books that I could use just for everyday stuff to research material for school. I never knew that this was available and I have been taking e-learning classes now from Clark for over a year. It really could have helped me out on several of my other classes. This is something that every student at Clark should be aware of as a tool for them to use.

I entered the “Home PC” into the search as instructed and found that there are 1503 titles in this category. I looked at several of the books and I found myself very familiar with some of them and in fact had a few of them. But the best part was that I just got a new laptop and it runs windows 7 and I was thinking I will need to pick-up a hot for dummies for it soon so I can learn all the tricks of it. And as if by reading my mind there are several great books on just that subject in full text! I don’t need to buy them! I can read them front to back or just search for what questions I have out of them.

Another great feature was the advanced search field. You can narrow what you’re looking for from titles, authors, full text and things like if it contains certain things or not. You can really narrow down what you’re looking for its way and take your search results from a thousand books to just a dozen.

What a great tool!

Matching Sources to Needs

For question #1 What laws are there to help keep company's from promoting merchandise inappropriate to my children? I could use for a source a scholarly journal because it could have original research on my question I could also use a reference book such as a law book to see if there are any laws that could be relevant to my questions.

For question #2 How can COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Production Act of 1998) help keep my kids safe when using the Internet. I could use as a source a government web site like usa.gov to learn more about COPPA. I could also use a periodical magazine to find popular opinion on the subject.

For question #3 What kind of personal privacy can I expect from my Internet provider. I could use reference book like a law book to see if there are any laws on this subject. I could also use newspapers to see if there are any articles about my subject and to further my search with any sources sited in the articles.

In this exercise we learned how to brainstorm ideas for research, how to narrow the ideas with brain mapping and use sources like subject encyclopedias to help continue to narrow your ideas. Subject encyclopedias and general encyclopedias are different in that a subject encyclopedias devote them self to a specific subject or area. where as a general encyclopedia gives you a brief introduction to a topic.

We also learned the difference from a web search of a topic and a deep web search. A normal search engine can only get information from web pages but can not go into a web pages database and get any "deep" information they might hold. So when doing research a deep web search can yield you valuable information that a normal search engine can't find you. So make sure you are utilizing all your search options and avoid non-researched and questionable articles that you can find in wikis. Wikipedia is an example of this. The information you find there can be edited by anyone and may not be researched or reliable.
